Sustainable Societies Consulting Group has always been rooted in a philosophy of equity and social justice and we’re thrilled that our organization has been recognized for our work in environmental and social sustainability. We’re incredibly proud to announce that Sustainable Societies Consulting Group has become a Certified B Corporation™! So, what exactly is B Corp Certification?

It’s a certification

Let’s talk coffee. Coffee is one of the most-traded commodities in the world, but the coffee industry can be volatile, unpredictable, and subject to dramatic price fluctuations. However, through the development of Fair trade, profits from coffee were used to empower farmers and invest in their communities. Fair trade organizations created trading partnerships based on transparency and respect while seeking out greater equity in trade. These partnerships contributed to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to coffee bean farmers. If that wasn’t good enough, Fair trade organizations are actively engaged in supporting producers and environmentally sustainable farming practices while prohibiting child labour.

Like Fair trade Coffee, B Lab provides an international certification to organizations that use business as a power for good, while constantly challenging us to rethink the status quo and our ways of doing business.

It’s a unique approach

SSCG believes that businesses should have a higher social purpose beyond profit. The B Corp assessment gives us a framework to measure our success against rigorous responsible practices as we continue to evolve as a company. We are now evaluated not only through our fiscal responsibilities, but also on our environmental and social impact. To learn more about SSCG’s practices, you can view our B Impact Assessment. We believe that our passion for transparent and accountable business practices puts us in a unique position and is also a better way to do business - especially for the communities we engage with and our employees.

Not only is our new certification great news for SSCG’s external stakeholders, it is great recognition for our team. Certified B Corps are more likely to have engaged employees as it demonstrates that their company walks the walk and gives them tools to set goals for continuous improvement. We love the work we do and are unwavering in our mission to facilitate cohesive, just, and inclusive communities within healthy and thriving environments.

It’s a movement

There are over 2,000 Certified B Corps around the world (find a B Corp near you) and we are pleased to join them in redefining success in business so that one day everyone uses business as a force for good. These companies vary from Patagonia (an outdoor clothing company) to Etsy (an online shop for creative people). Through the collective work of B Corps around the world, we hope to shape a more humane world for us all.

It inspires us

By now, I’m sure you are wondering – the “B” in B Corp represents a famous quote by Gandhi, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world”. However, we like to think it also stands for B Inspired, B Innovative, and B Responsible.

Our new B Corp certification is a natural extension of SSCG’s values: Community Wellbeing, Environmental Sustainability, Health Equity and Inclusion. Our certification is thus both a celebration of these values and a challenge to continue to innovate and add value to our community and the environment through our work.
